INTERNSHIPS AT AMERICAN SHORT FICTION

American Short Fiction is an award-winning, nationally distributed literary quarterly, based in Austin. It is part of the nonprofit Badgerdog Literary Publishing.

American Short Fiction interns receive hands-on training in copyediting, proofreading, and production scheduling; an insider's view to the story selection process; and free copies of the journal as well as other magazines and books.

Interns work ten to twenty hours per week for three to four months. Internships are unpaid.

At this time, the journal offers editorial internships only. If you are interested in a marketing or business internship, please email info[at]americanshortfiction.org (replace [at] with @) with your preference of internship and a cover letter relevant to that position.

Intern duties
* Reading, evaluating, and commenting on fiction submissions
* Attending editorial and production meetings
* Assisting in planning for future issues and events
* Working with editors on all aspects of the ASF short story contest
* Handling correspondence: logging story submissions and sending out manuscript rejections, submission guidelines, and new subscriptions
* Administrative work as necessary (copying, filing)
* Pursuing archival research
* Searching out new talent

We are looking for candidates with:
* Passion for good writing in general and contemporary literary fiction in particular
* Exemplary written and oral communication skills
* Computer literacy (some blogging or website-updating experience preferred)
* Self-motivation, dependability, and attention to detail

College juniors or seniors, as well as college graduates and graduate students, are welcome to apply. We recommend that all applicants have some background in English literature or a related field.

Internship applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Internships are scheduled according to the academic calendar, with positions available fall, winter, and summer. Scheduling is flexible, although it typically runs like this:

Fall internship: September 1 through December 15
Winter internship: January 2 through April 30
Summer internship: May 15 through August 31
